Your Next Job lies within Your Network


On any Friday night, go and head to a bar and seat yourself anywhere near a bunch of guys or ladies in corporate gear and tune in to their conversation. As the night goes on, you would probably hear of chatter about bonuses, bitchy bonuses and someone asking another if they knew of anyone hiring. Of all people, why would that person ask a colleague or a business partner/associate for a job opening?

Everything in business and your career is down to your network. Like it or not, the people around you are the ones that make you who you are, or at least give the impression to others who you are. In my professional life, I try to remain on cordial terms with everyone but I always keep those who I have an affinity to, in terms of ambitions, goals and ethics, very close by. I’ll explain next time why these 3 things matter next time.

But back to searching for your Next Job, your network is the gold mine of opportunities that you are shitting on if you are not properly nurturing, expanding and utilising it. Your network not only helps you open doors, get you in them but also seals the deal for you.

2. Who’s hiring?

Like it or not, there is a huge mismatch of information between people who are hiring and those who are looking to get hired. This is the reason recruiters are paid good money to not only look for someone that is not only qualified to do the job but also willing  to do the job. It also means it is down to you to go and figure it out for yourself if you do not want to go thru the trouble of engaging a recruiter.

My tip for you is to first go a scour the job portals for all the jobs that might interest you. From there, create a list of the 10 jobs that you would be willing to consider and from there, try to see if you would know anyone in these companies or are associated with. The next part is a no-brainer. Go and ask these people if the job does and exist (most job portal’s take forever to close positions) and if so, could they provide a recommendation.

3. Ask for a recommendation

This goes a really long way. People who can vouch for you could possibly be the biggest asset you could have in your job search. Even if that person is not in a position to hand you the job on a silver platter, having someone give HR a slight push could mean all the difference between waiting for another month for a reply or getting your hiring process done within the week (this literally happened to me).

While I might sound contradictory now, having an “in” could be a double-edged sword to you. Going back to my earlier point about keeping the few in your network closer than the rest, you need to be sure that the person who is your mouthpiece would accurately represent you as an individual. The last thing you would want is the office slacker giving a recommendation on your efficiency on the job.

4. What if I really don’t have anyone

Firstly, I am really sorry for you. Everyone really has someone to help you. All you have to do is ask. Believe it or not, one of the best referrer’s I had would be a barista who works in a co-working space. If I ever needed something, I would reach out to him to ask him to point me in the right direction. Just like how people rant out to their hairdressers, a lot of people at work rant to their coffee guy.
